Exhibition’s budget deficit shrinking, thanks in part to successful Whoop-Up Days

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Officials say things are starting to look better for Lethbridge & District Exhibition (Exhibition).

They made their October report to the city’s Economic Standing Policy Committee this week, showing that while the group is still in the red, it is not by nearly as much.

Exhibition had a budget shortfall of $1.9 million at the end of August 2024, which is less than a third of the $6.5 million that was initially estimated for the fiscal year.

Lethbridge Mayor Blaine Hyggen says it is great to see the organization moving in the right direction.

“It is very promising to see that number continue to come down while also seeing all of the exciting events and activities LDE is creating for the community,” says Hyggen. “The staff should really be commended for the hard work they have put in. We also want to thank the community, and the region, for supporting the various events happening in the facility.”

Part of the reason for the improving numbers was the 2024 Whoop-Up Days festival.

The event generated $242,500, nearly double the gross revenues from 2023.

A total of 40,178 people attended the 2024 Whoop-Up Days, which had paid admission. While the 2023 event had a record attendance of 77,263, people were able to get in for free.

Exhibition Acting CEO Kim Gallucci says the addition of a new concession in the Agri-food Hub & Trade Centre is also helping them to make more money.

“This brought in just under $30,000 during Whoop-Up Days and continues to do well at the events we have hosted since,” says Gallucci. “We are able to feature local products that highlight agriculture in our region like the french fries and cheese curds in our crowd favourite, poutine.”

Earlier this year, the entire Board of Governors at Exhibition stepped down due to financial issues and was replaced by officials from the City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge County.
