Lethbridge Police charge two in relation to carjacking

Nov 13, 2024 | 4:33 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Police have charged a male and female in connection with a carjacking incident.

On November 10, 2024 just after 11:30 p.m., police responded to a verbal altercation between a male and female outside a business along the 400 block of Mayor Magrath Drive South.

When approached, police say the male suspect fled on foot and forced the driver out of a nearby running truck. As the vehicle proceeded to leave the parking lot police observed a passenger inside and it was unknown at the time if the individual was a victim of the carjacking.

Police say the driver took off, driving erratically at high speeds and exited onto Highway 3 where he allegedly drove eastbound in the westbound lanes, and appeared to intentionally swerve at oncoming traffic.

Police intercepted the vehicle on 43 Street South, using a vehicle intervention technique to immobilize it, and both the truck and police vehicle came to a stop. They say the suspect attempted to flee on foot again, but was apprehended by officers at the scene.

The passenger of the vehicle was later determined to be the same female the male had previously been arguing with.

Matthew Martens, 33, of Nobleford faces multiple charges, including:

  • Robbery
  • dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • flight from peace officer
  • resisting a peace officer
  • uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm (x2)
  • failure to comply with release order conditions

Tracy Krystyne Fontaine, 35, of Lethbridge, is charged with possession of stolen property over $5000, abetting in committing an offence (robbery) and two counts of failure to comply with release order conditions.

Both were remanded in custody, and made their first court appearances on Tuesday, November 12.
