Lethbridge Police arrest 26, seize over $95,000 in drugs during enforcement project

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A month-long city-wide enforcement project by the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) aimed at targeting street-level drug traffickers, has resulted in more than two dozen arrests.

The operation was an effort to disrupt the distribution of drugs and reduce crime and social disorder after increased reports of public drug use, break-ins and vehicle thefts.

The operation began in mid-October and concluded earlier this week, and involved the Alberta Sheriffs south SCAN unit working collaboratively with the LPS Crime Suppression Team, Property Crimes Unit and Field Operations Division.

In total, 26 people were arrested, 63 drug charges were laid, and over $95,000 of drugs, along with six firearms and more than a dozen weapons, were seized. Police also executed nine separate search warrants, eight arrest warrants, seized six vehicles and more than $22,000 in cash proceeds of crime.

Inspector Jason Dobirstein, who oversees the Criminal Investigation Division, says, “While the arrests and seizures most certainly disrupted the sale, flow and consumption of drugs in our community, we know our efforts will be short-lived and we are committed to continuing the deployment of resources to target the city’s most prolific drug offenders.”

LPS is also running enforcement projects downtown targeting high frequency offenders and areas with high volumes of crime.
