Alberta’s population continues fast growth, despite immigration slowdown

It won’t be long before Alberta’s population reaches five million.

Statistics Canada has released its population estimates for the third quarter of 2024.

Alberta is now home to 4,931,691 residents, up 42,878 from the previous quarter.

International immigration made up the largest portion of the increase, despite that number falling over the last two years.

A total of 27,244 people moved to the province from outside of Canada in the third quarter, accounting for approximately 64 per cent of Alberta’s population gain. That is the smallest number since the fourth quarter of 2022.

Alberta was the only province with a notable increase in net interprovincial migration as 10,810 more Canadians moved to Alberta than Albertans moved to other provinces or territories.

The “natural increase,” or babies born in Alberta, accounted for the smallest portion of population gains at 4,824 (11.3 per cent).

The report from Statistics Canada shows that Alberta is more than pulling its weight when it comes to population. Despite being home to just 11.89 per cent of all Canadians, Alberta had almost one-quarter (24.3 per cent) of all population growth in the country this past quarter.

The agency says the country had its slowest period of growth since the first quarter of 2022.

Canada now has 41,465,298 residents, an increase of 176,699 people (0.4 per cent).

The main driver of the slowdown was immigration. In recent quarters, international immigration accounted for as much as 98 per cent of population increases, but that fell to 92 per cent.
