McCutcheon’s two goals lead Hurricanes past Warriors 6-2

The Lethbridge Hurricanes have won back to back games after a 6-2 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Tuesday, January 7.

The game saw the return of defenceman and former Warrior Vojtech Port to the Hurricanes lineup, after claiming bronze for Czechia at the World Juniors.

In the first, the Hurricanes struck first on the scoresheet. A high-sticking penalty to Krzysztof Macias sent the Hurricanes to the powerplay, where Tristen Doyle sent a point shot on net, past Josh Banini for his third goal of the season. Cameron Norrie and Kooper Gizowski assisted on the opener.

A little over five minutes later at the 15:26 mark, Port entered the zone and sent a wrist shot on the net. The puck hit the post and rebounded off Banini, who then knocked it in with his glove. The goal was Port’s first as a Hurricane.

In the second period, the Hurricanes found themselves down a man early after a double minor high sticking penalty to Brayden Edwards. On the ensuing powerplay, the Warriors got their first goal of the game when Ethan Semeniuk tipped a puck past Jackson Unger 2:38 in.

However, the Hurricanes would regain their two-goal lead soon after on another powerplay. Noah Chadwick took a pass from Brayden Yager and fed Logan Wormald at the bottom of the faceoff circle, who one-timed his 20th goal of the season past Banini. The goal also gave Wormald 40 points on the season.

Just 19 seconds later, the Warriors would add another goal off the stick of Ethan Hughes, who grabbed the puck off a rebound and put it past Unger.

Once again, Lethbridge would respond 1:30 later, when Cameron Norrie fired his third goal of the season in from the slot off a no-look backhand pass from Brayden Edwards. Logan McCutcheon got his first point of the night on the secondary assist.

Later in the period, McCutcheon would add a goal of his own, throwing the puck on net from the blue line and beating Banini for his fifth of the season, capping off a three goal period for Lethbridge in which they outshot Moose Jaw 23-10. Port and Gavin Lesiuk assisted on the goal.

In the game’s final frame, McCutcheon added another goal to seal an excellent night for him, unloading a one-timer from the faceoff circle to make it a 6-2 game. Edwards and Wormald both added their second points of the night on the goal as well.

For their efforts, McCutcheon, Port and Norrie were named the first, second and third star respectively, while Unger stopped 27 of 29 shots.

With the win, Lethbridge moved into third place in the Central Division with 44 points, overtaking the Edmonton Oil Kings. They sit just two points back of both the Medicine Hat Tigers and Calgary Hitmen.

The Hurricanes will now undertake a five-game road trip, beginning on Friday, January 10 with a game against the Swift Current Broncos.
