IN-PERSON ENGAGEMENT SESSIONS

Alberta seeking input on health care restructuring

Jan 9, 2025 | 3:44 PM

The Government of Alberta is inviting residents to share their feedback as it continues to refocus the province’s health care system.

In November 2023, the government announced plans to refocus the health care system in an effort to strengthen services, empower local decision-making, enhance support for front line workers and improve health outcomes for all Albertans, provincial officials claim.

A second round of engagement on these changes will begin on Jan. 21, and include in-person public sessions.

In addition to providing an update on the latest work being done and what it means for users, the sessions will also gather input on access to health care and the current experiences of the health care workforce. Through this, Alberta expects to identify opportunities to improve local decision-making.

“From the very start, we have been committed to building a health care system that works for every Albertan. By continuing the conversation, we are ensuring that their experiences, perspectives and expertise are reflected in our decision-making,” said Minister of Health Adriana LaGrange.

Sessions will be held across the province and a schedule and registration can be found online.

Officials say the findings from the first round of engagement, summarized in a What We Heard report, helped guide the design and implementation of the refocused system, and that this round of engagement will further inform that work. According to the government, the first round saw almost 3,000 Albertans attend in-person sessions, more than 18,000 gave feedback through online tools, and almost 10,000 participated in virtual town halls.

Since the first round, the government has launched the provincial health agencies Recovery Alberta and Primary Care Alberta, announced Acute Care Alberta, implemented legislative amendments to support the transition to the new system and continues work to establish an assisted living provincial health agency and regional advisory councils.

Albertans interested in keeping up to date on health care system refocusing and engagement opportunities can also sign up for an e-newsletter.
