On August 21, 2024, at 12:05 a.m., Coaldale RCMP responded to a two vehicle collision north of Coalhurst on Highway 3, at the interchange of Highway 3A.

Crews arrived on scene and found one vehicle fully engulfed in flames, and another with significant damage. One driver, a male resident of Lethbridge, received non life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. His 7-year-old son was transported to a Calgary hospital with critical injuries.

In the other vehicle, the female driver from Calgary, along with her 17 and 16-year-old passenger were also treated for their injuries, while a 13-year-old girl died of her injuries in hospital on August 22.

The RCMP Criminal Collision Investigation Team took control of the investigation, collaborating with Coaldale RCMP, an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist and the RCMP Interviewing Assistance Team. After five months of investigation, RCMP have charged the male driver involved in this collision.

Mark Briggs, 34, of Lethbridge was arrested by police on January 8, and has been charged with 15 criminal code offenses, including:

  • Operate a motor vehicle while impaired causing death
  • Dangerous driving causing death
  • Operate a motor vehicle while impaired causing bodily harm (x4)
  • Dangerous driving causing bodily harm (x4)

Briggs will appear in court in Lethbridge on February 10.
