Provincial budget release scheduled for Feb. 27

The Government of Alberta has scheduled the release of Budget 2025 for Thursday, Feb. 27, at the start of the new spring legislative session.

The government says that over 2023 and 2024, Alberta’s population grew at an unprecedented rate, putting strain on many of the province’s public services. Budget 2025 is said to meet the challenge of this strain while helping to plan for the future.

“Alberta is facing headwinds from every direction right now: cross-border trade issues, volatile oil prices and pressure on our public services as more people move here to make Alberta their home. I am working with my colleagues to build a budget that builds Alberta and meets the challenge head on,” said Nate Horner, president of treasury board and minister of finance.

The government adds that, given uncertainty in global geopolitics and energy markets, it will need to make thoughtful choices to meet its responsibilities. Additionally, the eventual costs of contract negotiations with thousands of public sector workers will need to be balanced with Alberta’s population growth.

Provincial representatives say the government “remains committed to fast-tracking school construction, fair and competitive taxes, and supporting high-quality health care, education and other public services.”

Development of the budget is expected to continue throughout February.
