Nearly 4,000 distracted drivers caught in Alberta last year

Feb 5, 2025 | 12:09 PM

Alberta RCMP are wanting to remind motorists of how important it is to be driving distraction-free.

They say while operating a motor vehicle on provincial roadways, one should always have complete attention on driving and be aware of surrounding motorists to reduce your risk of collision, especially during winter weather conditions.

In 2024 alone, RCMP members across the province charged 3,942 drivers with a ticket for distracted driving.

Mounties say there are a few points you can follow to make sure getting from point A to B can be free of distractions:

  • If something impairs your driving, it’s a distraction. This isn’t just limited to being on your electronic devices, but also grooming, eat and drinking, reading, adjusting devices like GPS or audio, and even attending to passengers or pets.
  • Planning ahead: like making sure your playlist, route directions, and more are pre-set before hitting the road.
  • Pull over and put your vehicle in park if you need to attend to distractions. Stopping at a red light does not constitute this, and is still considered distracted driving.
  • It’s simply not worth it, distracted driving can cost you a $300 fine in Alberta, and three demerit points against your license.

Sgt. Darin Turnbull with the Alberta RCMP Traffic says; “It may seem harmless to check a text or switch a song while driving, but that second where your attention is diverted could have devastating consequences.”

“Distractions behind the wheel are never worth putting yourself, or other motorists, at risk.”
