Funding announced to expand Handi-Ride in Coaldale area

Residents with mobility issues will soon be able to take a new bus in and around Coaldale.

The federal government has announced more than $3.4 million through the Rural Transit Solution Fund to support six projects in rural Alberta communities.

One of the organizations receiving funding is the Coaldale & District Handi-Ride Association.

They will use $182,400 in federal dollars to buy a new vehicle and expand fixed-route and on-demand transit capacities.

The bus will serve the areas of Coaldale, Lethbridge County and Lethbridge.

Other grant recipients include:

• Stoney Nakoda First Nation – $2,320,000
  • Purchase two busses and four shuttle buses
  • Create on-demand routing and payment systems
  • Install bus stops and other public transit-related infrastructure
• Parkland County – $308,000
  • Purchase two mini busses to provide public transit for local residents
• Lac La Biche County – $288,000
  • Purchase an accessible 12-seat electric bus and one EV charger
• Bearspaw First Nation – $200,715
  • Purchase three vehicles for transit service on the First Nation
• Town of Falher – $148,297
  • Purchase a bus to provide transit services to residents of the M.D. of Smoky River
