Most of southern Alberta under extreme cold warning

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for much of the region.

They say wind chill values between -40 and -45 degrees Celsius were recorded Tuesday morning.

Although wind chills are expected to moderate somewhat throughout the day, the extreme cold is expected to return tonight for some regions.

Temperatures are supposed to improve starting on Wednesday.

Some impacted communities include Lethbridge, Taber, Milk River, Medicine Hat, and Brooks.

The weather forecaster says extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

“Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter,” reads an advisory from Environment Canada.

Residents are asked to stay indoors whenever possible, and when they do need to go outside, to dress warmly in layers. Frostbite can develop in minutes.

Environment Canada adds that if it is too cold for you to stay outside, it is also too cold for your pet.
