City wide water drive

May 30, 2025 | 2:57 PM

We are expecting another hot dry summer, and local agencies will once again partner to ensure that bottled water is available to community members who are unable to take shelter from the heat.

For the fifth consecutive year, community members are encouraged to make donations of bottled water to Interfaith Food Bank and Lethbridge Food Bank to be shared through Food Share programs that serve the outreach teams who are on the front lines as Water Distribution Partners. Partners expect to collectively distribute well over 10,000 liters of water this summer.

Please join us for the City Wide Water Drive, June 1 – Aug. 31, 2025 by sharing the news, and encouraging donations of funds and bottled water to Interfaith and Lethbridge Food Banks to support local Outreach Teams this summer.

This year, we are pleased to announce that United Way has contributed $7,000 to assist with water purchases and The City of Lethbridge, through it’s Community Social Development Department and Encampment Response Team, will provide up to $3,000 in additional matching funding for financial and water donations collected from the community through this joint effort.

According to The City, a heat warning is issued in Alberta when daytime highs exceed 32 degrees Celsius and nighttime lows stay above 16 degrees for two or more consecutive days. The City of Lethbridge will lead Extreme Weather Response activities when these events occur. Cooling centres (locations where people can get out of the heat) will be made available, and of course the accessible water fountains are another option for community members. For those who cannot get out of the heat, staying hydrated is the next best option, though not a long term or sustainable solution.

It is important to note that heat emergencies can occur at temperatures lower than thresholds necessary for a heat warning to be issued, and outreach teams may need access to water at any time during the summer months. As food banks have the storage capacity and the logistics in place for facilitating community donations, Distribution Partners will access water from the food banks as needed throughout the summer. Distribution Partners include Outreach Teams from:

• Community Links

• Downtown Lethbridge Business Revitalization Zone

• Streets Alive

• Sage Clan Patrol

• Diversion Outreach Team (DOT)

• Canadian Mental Health Association

• MyCityCare

• Recovery Alberta

Please join us in encouraging donations from the community so everyone can stay safe, cool and hydrated this summer!
