“Safety, coping and connection” are what is behind a new recreation space for residents at Wood’s Homes’ group homes in Lethbridge.

Shauna Cohen, Regional Associate Director, says the non-profit has created what they call a Social Recreation Garage.

“We were able to create a space where young people can enjoy themselves, they can find connection, they can engage in recreation and exercise and social elements and things like that,” says Cohen. “It’s really just meant to be a safe space for the young people that we serve.”

Wood’s Homes provides mental health treatment and other supports for youths, adults and families in the communities they serve, including Lethbridge.

The Garage is adjacent to two of the organization’s group homes in the city, where up to nine youths can reside at a time. Residents of Wood’s Homes’ other facilities can also attend group activities.

Inside are a wide range of games, exercise and sports equipment, sensory items, theatre seating with a projector for movie nights, and more.

Cohen says the Garage provides an escape for vulnerable youths who are already dealing with so much hardship.

“To be able to have them enjoy a space that’s located in the proximity of where they’re residing is beneficial. It’s safe, it’s wonderful, and again, it just allows them to be kids and to enjoy themselves, just like anyone else,” says Cohen.

The Community Foundation of Southwest Alberta provided $15,000 in funding for the space while Home Depot contributed $10,000.

Cohen says they are looking to add more items to the Garage, such as games, art supplies, sports equipment or other things “that can benefit young people.”
