Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services (LFES) says it was able to extinguish a grass fire in the coulees quickly.

It happened around 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, near Scenic Drive and 2 Avenue South.

Firefighters from four stations attended the fire, which was burning uphill through dry grass and vegetation.

“Thanks to the fast actions of 9-1-1 callers and a coordinated response by fire crews, the fire was brought under control, preventing it from reaching nearby homes,” reads a media release from the City of Lethbridge.

No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged.

The cause of the grass fire remains under investigation.

LFES is reminding the public that a fire ban is in effect for the River Valley. It was enacted on June 26 in response to higher temperatures and drier conditions, which the fire department says is still the case today.

Residents are also asked to be careful when disposing of smoking materials, as they can easily ignite dry vegetation and lead to fast-moving fires.
