City of Lethbridge to complete Economic Development Strategy

Funding has been approved for the City of Lethbridge to move forward with its new Economic Development Strategy (EDS).

At its meeting on July 29, 2025, Lethbridge City Council approved a one-time grant of $475,000 from the Municipal Revenue Stabilization Reserve (MRSR) for the initiative.

Councillor Belinda Crowson says, “Having a powerful Council-developed vision, an up-to-date Economic Development Strategy and appropriate policies is essential to provide clear direction to Administration and our service providers.”

The strategy will provide an overarching vision for future economic development initiatives, including business incentives, ways of attracting investments, and monitoring.

The approval is based on recommendations from the July 10 Economic & Finance Standing Policy Committee meeting, which included discussions around the city’s fee-for-service funded partners, Economic Development Lethbridge and Tourism Lethbridge.

This week’s vote follows the approval of new development-based incentives in May 2025, which provide grants to cover the incremental increase in property taxes due to new investments. The program supports businesses in agrifood and agribusiness, trade and logistics, and alternative and renewable energy.
