Nick Tarnasky cleared to coach by Red Deer Minor Hockey following viral golf course brouhaha

Aug 6, 2025 | 5:41 PM

Red Deer Minor Hockey says the coach of its U17 AAA team, Nick Tarnasky, has been cleared to stay on in the role.

This came somewhat into question following an incident July 4 at a Red Deer-area golf course which went extremely viral on social media (see below).

The incident featured Tarnasky, a former NHLer/AHLer and prolific fighter, becoming involved in an altercation with a fellow golfer who is evidently the instigator when one watches the video.

In said video, Tarnasky is also seen throwing the other man into a pond, and delivering several punches.

RCMP were called to respond to the instigator of the fight, but that man ended up leaving the course prior to their arrival.

Tarnasky was never under RCMP investigation.

“We take all incidents seriously and approach them with the utmost care,” Jason Stephens, General Manager of Red Deer Minor Hockey, said Aug. 6.

“After thorough discussions and a full review of the matter, we are confident that no further action is required. Coach Tarnasky has shown accountability, and we believe in his ability to move forward and continue his positive contributions to the program.”

A release from the hockey association adds that they remain committed to providing a safe, enjoyable, and respectful environment for youth hockey.
