Temporary speed reductions on westbound Whoop-Up Drive

The City of Lethbridge has announced a new change to traffic flow on Whoop-Up Drive as bridge maintenance work continues.

As of 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26, crews have been pouring high-performance concrete on the bridge’s expansion joints.

In an effort to minimize vibration and ensure the integrity of the pour, a temporary speed reduction will be in place for westbound drivers:

  • Westbound traffic will be reduced to 30 km/h while driving over the bridge.
  • Signage will alert motorists ahead of the work zone, with two reminder signs within the zone.
  • The reduced speed limit is expected to be in place until Friday, August 29, at 12 p.m.
  • Drivers are asked to slow down, follow posted signage and exercise caution while crossing the bridge.

The City says the concrete pour will have no impact on the peak-hour lane changes that started last week.

“Two westbound lanes will continue to open from 2 – 8 p.m. to accommodate the afternoon and evening commute. Eastbound traffic on the bridge is limited to a single lane during these times. Lane changes during peak hours will continue until both directions are fully open to two-way traffic in early September,” reads a notice from the City of Lethbridge.

This work is said to be unrelated to the incident on August 6, where a flatbed trailer carrying heavy equipment struck the underside of the Whoop-Up Drive bridge.

Heavy load trucks, not including standard pickups, are not permitted to use the westbound lanes of Whoop-Up Drive. Instead, they will have to take Highway 3.
