Mikado Electric renews $100K commitment to Interfaith Food Bank

A local company is once again pledging its support to a food bank in Lethbridge.

Mikado Electric has pledged $100,000 in support of the Interfaith Food Bank over the next five years.

Owner Mike Mikado says he felt it was a great opportunity to help out the most people in the community.

“We did one five years ago, and we’re having our 20th anniversary, so we figured we would renew the commitment. The community’s been very supportive of us, so we figured this is the best way to reciprocate,” says Mikado.

Instead of making a direct financial contribution, Mikado says he will seek out the best deals for food and periodically bring items into the food bank.

Danielle McIntyre, Executive Director of the Interfaith Food Bank, told media that the pledge will go a long way in supporting those in need.

“It does definitely give us a little bit of relief,” explains McIntyre. “It’s not enough – it’s one of those things where we have to constantly be out in the community and ask for this help, but when you get a substantial contribution or a commitment like this, it makes you feel like there’s a possibility of meeting the annual food budget each year.”

Food Banks Canada estimates that one in four Canadians are “food insecure,” meaning that they are struggling to put enough food on the table.

In March 2024, there were over two million visits to food banks across the country, the highest in Canadian history for a single month.

Danielle McIntyre on the rising need for food banks in Canada.

McIntyre says she has seen the numbers going up in recent years in Lethbridge.

“A lot of it has to do with the fact that there’s just not enough money going around for all of the needs there are with the current state of the economy. We’re seeing people at the food bank we normally don’t see because of this circumstance,” she adds.

With school returning in the first week of September, McIntyre says they are especially looking for items that could be part of a healthy lunch for a child.
