‘Erroneous’ claims being made about human remains case in Brooks, says RCMP

The RCMP says speculation and misleading information are not helpful.

The Brooks detachment, along with the RCMP Major Crimes Unit, is continuing to investigate the case of 20-year-old Fatima Ahmed, who was found deceased in an alley in the community on Aug. 20.

Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, a spokesperson for the RCMP, told LNN that investigations like this one are complex and they have yet to determine a cause of death. However, there have been no indications of an ongoing risk to the public.

He says several social media posts have been made in recent days, containing what he describes as “erroneous information,” including the cause of death, how the body was discovered, and whether or not there was a serial killer on the loose.

“Rather than just letting social media run wild and people be concerned about the safety of their community, we just wanted to set that record straight and just make sure that any concerns [people] might have are alleviated,” says Savinkoff.

A statement from the RCMP advises that people “Should take what is circulating on social media with some skepticism, especially when there has been no official police report or warning issued. We recommend that the public rely on verified information from trusted sources.”

Anyone who has information is asked to contact the Brooks RCMP at 403-794-4400. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online at P3Tips.com, or by using the P3 Tips mobile app.
