UPDATE: Animal cruelty cases in Lethbridge force Shelter to pause dog intakes

The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) says it has responded to three separate instances of alleged animal cruelty in just the last week.

Between the various investigations, a total of 20 animals were seized and are in the care of Community Animal Services.

September 2

Community Animal Services reported a dog in distress at a home on the 500 block of 18 Street South.

The dog was said to be “extremely” thin, did not have access to food or water, and had sores and an open wound on his body.

The dog was picked up and taken to a local veterinarian for treatment.

John Joseph Rosenberg, 39, and Atia Leslie Fleming, 45, of Lethbridge, are charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. Both were released with conditions not to possess or care for any domestic animal. They are scheduled to appear in court on October 28.

September 4

Community Animal Services noted that multiple animals were found in distress during a property inspection on the 600 block of 9 Street South.

LPS seized four puppies, three adult dogs, four cats, a lizard, a mouse and a fish.

“The animals were not being properly cared for and conditions inside the residence made it unfit for habitation, resulting in a closure order that required two tenants – a 23-year-old female and 22-year-old male – to vacate the property,” reads a media release from LPS.

This matter remains under investigation, and LPS says that is why the names of the suspects have not been released.

September 8

LPS responded to a report of an unattended vehicle in the alley along Leaside Avenue with numerous cats inside. Five felines were seized from the vehicle.

Officers say there were also additional cats around the property.

The 55-year-old owner of the vehicle was issued five bylaw tickets for failing to provide basic animal care. Each of the tickets has a $300 fine, resulting in a total combined fine of $1,500.

Since the man is not facing criminal charges and LPS says this is not a matter of public record, his name cannot be released.

LPS says it will not be releasing any further information on any of the cases at this time.
