Primary Care Alberta (PCA) has appointed its first chief nursing officer.

Dr. Kim Hogarth is the new CNO, an Alberta first, and among the first in Canada with a role focused on primary care, AHS notes in a release.

“Primary care works best when every member of the team contributes their expertise, including at the leadership table,” says PCA CEO Kim Simmonds.

“With Dr. Hogarth as CNO, nurses will remain part of key decisions about how we strengthen and improve access to primary care.”

Nurses represent nearly half of PCA’s workforce and often serve as the bridge between patients, their families and the health care system, it was added.

“Throughout my career, making sure nurses can deliver the best care possible has always mattered most,” says Dr. Hogarth, whose clinical background includes rural emergency, labour and delivery and acute care. “It’s an honour to represent nursing voices and help improve care for Albertans.”

Previous roles include program director in provincial medical affairs with Alberta Health Services, and more than a decade in post-secondary education, including senior academic appointments at Red Deer Polytechnic and Bow Valley College in health science faculties.

Dr. Hogarth holds a masters of nursing in nurse practitioner and a doctorate in nursing practice. A member of the Métis Nation of Alberta, she is passionate about Indigenous health and committed to building strong partnerships with Indigenous communities.
