Tom Roulston running for Lethbridge City Council

A local journalist and broadcaster has entered the race for Lethbridge City Council.

Tom Roulston has announced his candidacy in the 2025 municipal elections, set for October 8-20, 2025.

He provided the following answers to an LNN questionnaire:

Why did you want to run for Lethbridge City Council?

I’m running for City Councillor because I love Lethbridge and I want to see it thrive.

I believe our city needs leaders who can bring a positive, can-do attitude to city hall each day. Leaders who want to collaborate to find solutions. Who are willing to listen to expert opinions before taking an informed position. And who approach challenges through a constructive and compassionate lens.

What personal or professional experience do you have that you feel would make you a good city councillor?

With a career in broadcast and digital journalism spanning more than 16 years, I’ve always valued and understood the importance of hearing from and telling all sides of a story. If elected, I intend to take that same balanced approach to city hall. Listening to and weighing multiple perspectives before any decisions are made. Working in news, I’ve had a front row seat to the biggest stories in our city over the past decade and a half. Some of them have reflected our city in a positive light, others have not. Journalism allows you the ability to keep your finger on the pulse of your community in a way other professions cannot. You’re able to follow the decisions coming from all levels of government, learn about their impact from the people who are directly impacted and weigh the broader public’s response.

My time in journalism has also shaped me into a positive, compassionate and organized leader. As a news manager from 2023 until recently, I’ve supported many young reporters in understanding the importance of best journalism principles and practices, how to navigate their mistakes and missteps, refine their craft, and most importantly, celebrating their wins and supporting them in career growth. Prior to my time in management, I was also an advocate for the Canadian journalism industry as a whole, serving on the national executive of Unifor Local M-1, one of the largest media locals in Canada, from 2021-2023.

What would be a few of your top priorities if elected?

I anticipate my priorities will evolve over the course of the campaign as I engage with voters over the next few weeks.

If elected, I’m committed to collaborating with other members of council on solutions to ease the financial burden on taxpayers while maintaining adequate city service levels.

I’m committed to advocating on behalf of the city to provincial and federal levels of government for support with key infrastructure investments, including but not limited to a third river crossing.

I would support re-opening discussions about moving to a ward system in future municipal elections.

I also know public safety and affordable housing are important issues for many of our residents. It’s critical we continue ongoing discussions to find solutions on both fronts. I don’t believe there’s a single, magic bullet fix to either. If elected, I’m committed to working with members of council on strategies that address the cause, not the symptom, and to do so through an approach of compassion and understanding.
