A neuroscience student at the University of Lethbridge believes that he has what it takes to become the city’s next mayor.

Quentin Carlson has announced his candidacy in the 2025 municipal elections, which are set for October 8-20.

He says that he is not a career politician, nor is he looking to become one. Instead, he tells LNN that he wants to be a leader for the community.

“I’m a resident who is passionate about public service and ready to bring a fresh, modern perspective to city hall. I believe that, by working together and focusing on practical solutions, we can build a city that is safer, more affordable, and more vibrant for everyone,” says Carlson.

Carlson is a third-year neuroscience student at the U of L and currently works as a security guard downtown.

He believes that his educational background gives him a strong understanding of the importance of research and data-driven decision-making, which he says will form the foundation of his approach to governance.

“As a mayor, my job is not to have all the answers, but to answer all the right questions, to listen to the experts, and to be a facilitator who empowers others to get things done.”

Through his work in security, Carlson says he is on the ground every day, speaking with business owners and assisting the city’s vulnerable populations.

Carlson’s campaign is built on three pillars – rebuilding public trust, creating a liveable and affordable city, and fostering a resilient local economy.

On the topic of public trust, he says he wants to create “Lethbridge Listens,” a weekly e-town hall program to give residents a direct line to city hall.

Carlson says he would look to address housing affordability through a housing-first pilot program that focuses on providing permanent housing and voluntary supports for Lethbridge’s most vulnerable residents.

He would also aim to create a small-scale co-op development office to support local entrepreneurs and foster a more inclusive and innovative business ecosystem.
