It is a two-man race for the mayor’s seat in Taber.

Alf Rudd has announced that he will be challenging incumbent Andrew Prokop in the 2025 municipal election, which is set for October 20.

“I think it’s time for a change,” says Rudd. “We’ve had, going into 10 years of the same leadership, and I think it’s just time to get a different pace to things, a different style of leadership, I think, would be a real benefit to the community.”

Rudd believes that he has the experience necessary to ensure Taber continues to grow in a healthy and sustainable way.

He has 45 years of experience in law enforcement, the majority of which were in leadership roles. That includes seven years as the chief of the Taber Police Service from 2009 to 2016 and seven years as the chief of the Blood Tribe Police Service from 1998 to 2005.

Rudd tells LNN that his real passion in law enforcement is victim services. He says he was part of the initial effort in the 1980s to establish victim services within the RCMP and helped to write the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights.

The retired police chief has also served on a variety of boards and commissions throughout his career.

“I was just, generally, directing the organizations that I worked for, as well, and picking up experience along the way that, I think, translates very well over into community governance,” says Rudd.

Rudd also has some experience on Taber town council.

He was elected in the 2021 elections, but was forced to step down in 2023 in order to accept a new job as the Victim Services Manager for the Taber Police Service.

Rudd says some of his top priorities include carrying on work to complete the Town of Taber’s established community project list and continuing to drive economic growth.

Water is also a key concern for him.

“With the establishment of the Canada Food Corridor and participation in the SouthGrow group, which takes in all of southern Alberta, the work that’s being done on the perspective of getting water, fresh water, potable water rather than irrigation water down the line here as well to encourage industry to come into the area.”
