Lethbridge traffic notes

Sep 29, 2025 | 11:03 AM

The City of Lethbridge is notifying residents about a number of traffic projects local drivers should be aware of.

Overnight Sunday and Monday impacts

  • Monday, Sept. 29, the westbound lanes on Whoop-Up Drive will be fully closed
  • The southbound Scenic Drive off-ramp will also be closed, detouring traffic onto 5 Avenue, then 5 Street to 6 Avenue onto Whoop-Up Drive
  • There will be two-way traffic in eastbound lanes

Either Monday, Sept. 29, or Tuesday, Sept. 30, depending on timing and weather cooperation, will be the final day for peak hour lane changes introduced on August 20. City officials say they have had two westbound lanes open from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. to accommodate the afternoon and evening commute. Eastbound traffic on the bridge has been limited to a single lane during these times.

Lane updates for Wednesday, Oct. 1

  • The anticipation is to re-open two lanes in each direction by Wednesday, Oct. 1
  • As one lane in each direction has the most heavily damaged girders, following the unrelated bridge incident from August 6, the city says those lanes will need to remain closed until the repairs are completed
  • Numbering the lanes from one to six, from north to south: the city says 1 and 2 will be open, 3 and 4 will remain closed, 5 and 6 will be open
  • The northbound Scenic Drive off-ramp onto Whoop-Up Drive will re-open
  • The speed limit will remain at 50 km/h
  • Additional signage will be in place

Further updates to bridge repairs from girder incident anticipated next week

  • The city says work is still being done to finalize the design for the repairs needed. The city anticipates having a more detailed update by mid-to-late next week

Drivers are asked to slow down, follow posted signage and exercise caution while crossing the bridge. The city thanks local motorists for their cooperation in observing posted speed limits for the safety of workers and the long-term durability of this vital infrastructure.
