Lethbridge Hurricane Shane Smith to raise money for CMV Foundation

A member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes is set to do his part for charity.

The Shane Scores for Maia campaign is returning for the 2025-26 season.

Hurricanes forward Shane Smith will donate $25 for every point he records this season to the Canadian CMV Foundation, in honour of his niece Maia, who was diagnosed with Cytomegalovirus (CMV) at birth.

Last year, Smith and the Hurricanes raised over $2,800 for the Foundation as he recorded 30 points (12g-18a) in the regular season and another six points (3g-3a) in the post-season.

“It was important to me to bring the campaign back because I think you can’t raise enough awareness for a foundation, but particularly this one being a smaller, less known foundation that I hope to continue to build support and awareness while raising more money this season,” says Smith. “I hope to continue to raise awareness for the Canadian CMV Foundation to help educate people about what CMV is and how we can help improve the foundation.”

The Canadian CMV Foundation is a national charity dedicated to preventing congenital CMV infections and enhancing the well-being of those impacted.

CMV is a virus that babies can get, which can often lead to serious, long-term health problems.

Across Canada, up to one in 200 Canadian newborns contract congenital CMV during pregnancy, and one in five cases can result in a lifelong disability.

So far this season, Smith has already recorded six points (3g-3a) in four games, amassing $150 for the Foundation.
