The first snowfall of the season may arrive in Cranbrook by the end of the Thanksgiving long weekend, according to predictions from Environment Canada.

After a sunny Friday with a high of 19 C, temperatures are expected to drop throughout the weekend.

Showers are forecast for Saturday and Sunday, with a high of just 5 C on Sunday.

Periods of rain or snow are expected to begin Sunday night, with lows reaching –1 C.

There is a 60 per cent chance of flurries in the forecast for Monday, with a high of 5 C and a low of –3 C overnight.

As conditions shift toward wet and icy roads, BC Highway Patrol is warning drivers that posted speed limits apply only in ideal conditions.

“You can get a speeding ticket even when you’re driving below the posted speed limit,” said Superintendent Mike Coyle.

“In bad weather or darkness, you are legally obligated to drive more carefully.”

Under the Motor Vehicle Act, drivers can be fined $196 for going too fast in poor weather, even if they’re within the posted limit.
