The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has laid charges after tens of thousands of dollars worth of lumber was stolen from a pair of local businesses.

Police responded to a report of a theft from Challenger Building Supplies on the 3300 block of 8 Avenue North on Sept. 2, 2025.

LPS says about $12,000 worth of plywood had been taken from the store.

The following day, $19,000 worth of hardie board was stolen from Logic Lumber on the 1200 block of 39 Street North, and another $4,000 worth of products had been damaged.

β€œIn both incidents, the locks to fenced compounds were damaged in order to gain entry and the thefts occurred over the weekend,” reads a media release from LPS.

Officers later discovered that a tandem truck with a crane had been taken from Challenger Building Supplies and that it was used to complete the theft at Logic Lumber.

A black truck and trailer, said to be loaded with stolen products, was recorded on CCTV leaving the yard at Challenger.

LPS says it was able to identify the registered owner of the black truck and trailer. Search warrants were subsequently executed at three properties.

The stolen lumber was found at a home in Airdrie, where some of it was reportedly being used to build a new garage, as well as a rural property under construction in Rocky View County.

A suspect was arrested in Airdrie on Oct. 2 without incident.

Darren Jerry Day, 52, of Airdrie, is charged with two counts of shopbreaking and commit theft and theft of a motor vehicle. Day was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on December 11.
