Teachers strike having impact on those training to become teachers

Oct 15, 2025 | 10:33 AM

Alberta’s massive teachers strike is having an impact on people training to become teachers.

Haley Roberts, an education student from the University of Alberta, says she was supposed to begin a required Grade 4 practicum on the day teachers walked off the job.

She says students can’t get their hours elsewhere, so in lieu of class time, she is expected to meet with practicum facilitators, where they review material she learned earlier in her career.

The strike, which entered its sixth day Tuesday, has kept some 740-thousand students out of school.

Bargaining talks also resumed Tuesday after weeks of radio silence.

Jillian Gulli says not hearing from the university about next steps has stressed out many of her classmates.

Gulli says she wants to teach in Alberta and is hopeful a good deal emerges from the latest talks.

A spokesperson for the University of Alberta did not provide comment Tuesday.
