Southern Alberta Art Gallery presents exhibitions linking photography and nature

Oct 28, 2025 | 3:32 PM

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin is set to open two new exhibitions on Monday, Nov. 1, both exploring how photography connects to the natural world.

The exhibitions — Image Metabolisms by Nancy Valladares and Other Suns by David M.C. Miller — will run until Jan. 10, 2026.

Opening day includes remarks at 3:30 p.m., an artist talk and tour at 4 p.m., and a reception at the gallery, located at 601 3 Avenue South.

Valladares, a New York City–based artist, presents her first solo exhibition in Canada.

Image Metabolisms examines how photography depends on chemical and industrial processes linked to fossil fuels, Intended to show how images are connected to systems of energy and extraction.

Miller, a Lethbridge-based artist, explores photography from a different perspective in Other Suns.

His work focuses on the endless energy of sunlight, viewing photography as a way to experience light’s abundance rather than capture it.

The gallery says it supports artists who challenge ideas and encourage new ways of seeing art.
