Alberta sets new record for electricity use

Dec 17, 2025 | 3:49 PM

Albertans used more energy during a particular day last week than at any other point.

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) says a new peak load of 12,785 MW was reached on Thursday, Dec. 11.

The previous record, set on Jan. 11, 2024, was 12,384 MW.

According to the AESO, grid conditions remained stable during the peak, and there were no supply issues, despite higher demand from colder temperatures.

They believe that the risk of subsequent spikes in electricity demand over the holiday season is low.

“The grid is designed to operate in cold winter temperatures and is well prepared to meet the higher electricity demand typically experienced during the winter months,” reads a statement to Pattison Media.

The AESO adds that its system controllers and forecasters will continue to monitor both current and anticipated conditions to maintain grid reliability throughout the year.
