A Coaldale man will continue to be a key player in the municipal office for the next five years.

The Town of Coaldale has announced that it has extended the contract of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Kalen Hastings to the end of 2031. His previous contract was set to expire on Jan. 1, 2026.

Officials with the Town say Hastings’ 15-year tenure has coincided with a “significant period of capital investment, organizational growth, and community development.”

Mayor Jack Van Rijn believes that he is a strong and capable CAO who provides steady leadership and sound judgment.

“He brings clarity to complex issues, offers balanced and evidence-based advice, and works collaboratively with Council and staff,” says Van Rijn.

The mayor adds, “Over the past several years, his transparent and professional approach has strengthened Council-administration relationships and sustained a focus on long-term planning and effective service delivery.”

Hastings was the recipient of the 2025 Dedicated Chief Administrative Officer Award by Alberta Municipalities and the Society of Local Government Managers.

It honours those who have served more than 10 years as a CAO and who are respected for demonstrating a high level of integrity and contributions in areas such as policy development, council relations, human resources, financial management, long-term strategic planning, project planning and implementation, community relations, and professional development.
