Fort Macleod emergency department temporarily closed

Dec 29, 2025 | 9:21 AM

Residents of Fort Macleod will need to go elsewhere if they are having a medical emergency.

Alberta Health Services has announced the temporary closure of the emergency department at the Fort Macleod Health Centre.

The closure started Monday morning, Dec. 29, and it is set to reopen at 7:00 p.m. on the same day.

According to AHS, the temporary closure is due to an unexpected shortage of clinical personnel and an inability to secure coverage.

People are asked to phone 911 if they require emergency care. EMS calls will be rerouted to Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, which is 49 km away.

Patients can also go to Chinook Regional Hospital or the health centres in Pincher Creek, Cardston, or Claresholm.

Those with non-urgent health-related questions can phone Health Link at 811 at any time.

Nursing staff will remain on-site at the Fort Macleod Health Centre to look after long-term care residents.
