The RCMP has arrested a man for allegedly assaulting a law enforcement officer.

Around 4:20 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, the Crowsnest Pass detachment says members responded to a report of an erratic driver on Highway 22, south of Highway 520.

Initial reports suggested that the driver may have been impaired.

The vehicle was located, and when an officer approached, they claimed to have seen a man walk by the trunk while another was sitting in the passenger seat.

The officer reportedly smelled alcohol and placed the man under arrest. The man allegedly resisted and assaulted the officer before fleeing on foot.

Alberta RCMP Police Dog Services arrived on scene, and a K9 was deployed. The dog tracked down and subdued the man.

The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

Robert Val-Lane Edwards, 58, of Calgary, is charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, obstruction, prohibited operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and refusing to be screened for alcohol consumption.

Edwards has been remanded into custody and is set to appear in court in Lethbridge on Jan. 12, 2026.
