Heat records set in 39 Alberta communities Wednesday

Jan 15, 2026 | 8:47 AM

Mid-January continues to be a particularly warm one in Alberta.

Environment Canada says heat records were set in 39 communities across the province on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, including 14 in the southern region.

Among those, Claresholm was the warmest at 19.5 degrees Celsius, breaking its previous record of 13.8 from 2008.

Lethbridge was also one of the hotter communities, reaching a high of 17.5 degrees. That put an end to the city’s 84-year-old record from 1942.

The oldest heat record that was toppled on Wednesday was in Medicine Hat, which was set before the start of World War II in 1931. That city got up to 14.4 degrees this week.

Other communities in southern Alberta that set new heat records include Bow Island, Bow Valley Provincial Park, Brooks, Calgary, Cardston, Crowsnest Pass, Drumheller, Milk River, Pincher Creek, Stavely, and Waterton Lakes National Park.
