Lethbridge’s post-secondaries announce Black History Month celebrations

The city’s biggest post-secondary institutions have announced lineups of celebrations and activities for Black History Month.

Lethbridge Polytechnic

Lethbridge Polytechnic is planning events throughout February to celebrate 10 years of recognizing Black history on campus.

Dr. Kenny Corscadded, Vice President of Academics and Research, says these will highlight Afro-Caribbean culture, lived experiences and community connection.

“Lethbridge Polytechnic is proud to host a diverse and inclusive community of students and employees on campus,” says Corscadden. “Celebrating Black History Month helps strengthen an environment where diversity is valued and everyone feels a sense of caring and belonging.”

The opening celebration takes place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, featuring speakers, music and free food. Members of the broader community are encouraged to attend to meet new people, hear meaningful stories and learn more about Black culture.

On Feb. 11, students and employees can take home a guided meal kit to make Nigerian jollof rice. This is meant to be a hands-on way to experience a beloved West African dish.

The Polytechnic will host a panel discussion focused on the experiences of Black parents living in Canada on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 11:30 a.m.

There are also Black History Month-themed Jeopardy events throughout the month, and there will be more opportunities for informal learning and engagement across campus.

The final event is an inclusive, cultural-themed fashion show on Feb. 26, at 11:30 a.m. in The Cave, which will be followed by lunch.

University of Lethbridge

The U of L will also put on a wide array of activities for Black History Month.

In a statement from President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Digvir Jayas and Vice-Provost of Accessibility, Belonging, and Community Martha Mathurin Moe, they say this is part of their commitment to shaping the future, engaging communities, challenging boundaries, and inspiring curiosity.

“At ULethbridge, we recognize that Black history is not a separate chapter of our shared story — it’s essential to understanding who we are as an institution and society. Black History Month is a time to celebrate that collective spirit for resiliency, flourishing, and community, but it’s important to recognize the ongoing struggles against systemic racism and inequality, especially during times of polarization and misinformation.”

It begins on Tuesday, Feb. 3, with the Roots & Rhythm Fashion Walk Show at 1:00 p.m. Taking place from the ULSU Office to UHall Atrium, the fashion walk will feature students in cultural attire.

There will also be an Afrobeats dance class on the same day from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the ULSU Ballroom.

On Feb. 10, the University will take a Black History Month Group Photo at 1:15 p.m. Participants are asked to wear a BHM t-shirt.

The University of Lethbridge Black Students Association will host its Black Excellence Gala on Feb. 27, which will celebrate Black Excellence, leadership, culture and community.

The festivities will wrap up on Feb. 28 with the BIPOC Foundation Black History Month Pitch Competition. Participants are invited to present their business idea to a panel and have the chance to win up to $2,000.
