Lethbridge MP ‘super excited’ Pierre Poilievre retained Conservative leadership

A local politician says she supports Pierre Poilievre staying on as the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

More than 87 per cent of party members voted to lend their support to Poilievre at its national convention in Calgary this past weekend.

Among those who voted for Poilievre was Lethbridge MP Rachael Thomas.

She called it a “commanding victory” and said that she and other Conservatives are “super excited” to see him continue as leader.

“Pierre works incredibly hard, and he’s very intelligent,” says Thomas. “He has a vision for Canada, and he’s very much on the side of working people. I have every confidence in his leadership and his ability to take us forward in the next election and offer something great to the Canadian public.”

Having represented the Lethbridge riding since 2015, she tells LNN that the number one issue she has been hearing from Canadians, especially in recent years, is affordability.

She claims that the Liberals, under both Justin Trudeau and Mark Carney, are not taking meaningful action to address this issue.

The Member of Parliament says the Conservatives have the strongest platform on affordability, and just this week, they proposed measures to eliminate some of the often-unseen factors that make groceries more expensive.

“There’s a lot of hidden taxes on food, for example, whether that’s a fuel tax applied at the farm gate; there’s also an extra fee applied to packaging and different plastics that are used, so let’s remove those,” says Thomas.

She adds that expanding energy production will add significant amounts of tax revenue, meaning that the federal government would be in a better position to support those in need.

On public safety, Thomas says the Conservatives are continuing to advocate for reforms that would make bail more restrictive for repeat violent offenders, and repeal a rule that requires judges to release accused people “at the earliest possible opportunity” under the “least onerous conditions.”

With the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada now settled, Thomas says she is looking forward to seeing the Official Opposition continue to spread its message across the country and in Parliament.
