$10M grant for Coaldale company to build first-of-its kind carbon capture facility

A business in Coaldale has received a major injection of funding that will allow it to turn cow manure into energy.

Taurus Canada Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Corp. will receive $10 million from the Alberta Government’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) program.

Phillip Abrary, Chair and CEO of Taurus, says they can now proceed with pioneering the fully-integrated Renewable Energy and Carbon Capture Sequestration Project.

They will build a fully integrated anaerobic digestion and carbon sequestration facility that will produce natural gas from livestock manure.

“In partnership with KCL Cattle Company and Kasko Cattle Co., this first-of-its-kind project will pave the way to establishing global leadership in renewable energy and sustainable farming practices,” says Abrary.

The project will utilize a natural decomposition process to break down manure and process bio-methane, ensuring it does not escape into the atmosphere.

It will transform 130,000 tonnes of manure into 360,000 gigajoules of RNG every year, which Taurus estimates is enough to power 4,500 homes. They add that the reduction in emissions is equivalent to removing 3,800 cars from the road.

“This anaerobic digestion and carbon sequestration facility represents a breakthrough in agricultural technology, turning a waste stream into a valuable resource, enhancing sustainable farming and redefining the value of feedlot manure for cattle operations,” says Abrary.

The facility will break ground this summer and should be operational by January 2028.

This announcement is part of a wider investment of $28 million from the TIER program into six projects in Alberta aimed at reducing costs, improving efficiency and lowering environmental impacts.

Grant Hunter, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, and the MLA for Taber Warner, says the government is working to increase energy production and protect the environment at the same time.

“The world wants our energy, and these technologies can help us deliver while lowering emissions and keeping our industries competitive for decades to come. We’re investing in made-in-Alberta projects because nobody innovates faster and better than Albertans,” says Hunter.
