Recall petition against Lethbridge-East MLA declared ineligble

Nathan Neudorf will retain his seat in the legislature after an effort to kick him out of office was unsuccessful.

Elections Alberta says the recall petition facing the MLA for Lethbridge-East has been declared “ineligible to be authorized.”

Forms were not submitted to the agency by the end of the 90-day canvassing period, meaning signature sheets have not been counted.

All copies of signature sheets must now be destroyed.

The proponent of the petition was Ryan Tanner, an elusive figure whom no media has been able to contact.

In order for the recall petition to be successful, organizers needed to collect 13,207 signatures, or 60 per cent of the votes cast in the riding during the most recent provincial election. It is unclear how many people ended up signing.

Many residents of Lethbridge have expressed frustrations with Tanner, as they have been unable to sign the petition or volunteer as canvassers.

That led to speculation that Tanner might have been working with Neudorf to suppress efforts to kick him out of office.

During an interview with LNN on Dec. 12, however, Neudorf said that this was not true, and that he does not even know Tanner.

“Maybe I have met him, to be perfectly honest, but I’m not aware of it,” Neudorf said back in December. “Both in my current job and in my former job in construction, I meet thousands of people a year, so I couldn’t say definitively, but no, I don’t have a relationship with him in any way, and I’m not involved in any way in my own recall petition.”

LNN has reached out to the Lethbridge-East constituency office for further comments.

The recall against Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock MLA Glenn Van Dijken was also ruled ineligible.

As well, Elections Alberta says the recall petition against Red Deer-South MLA Jason Stephan has failed. Only 4,255 signatures had been collected out of the 14,508 required.
