Lethbridge County offering support for farmers with soil erosion

Farmers dealing with dry and eroding soil can turn to Lethbridge County for help.

The County’s Agriculture Services team can help landowners identify options to prevent further loss and reduce impacts.

They say that, with high winds and limited snow cover, some producers are already noticing topsoil move off fields.

This can have significant impacts on crop production.

“Soil loss can be costly and difficult to reverse, reducing soil productivity and impacting crop performance over time. For each inch of topsoil lost to erosion, crop yields can be lowered by several bushels per acre,” reads a notice from Lethbridge County.

Farmers are encouraged to monitor their fields for early signs of erosion.

They can call the County’s office at 403-328-5525 Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Lethbridge County has partnered with local producers to create a short video that highlights soil erosion prevention and management strategies.

If manure application is identified as a solution, make sure to follow the Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) regulations before spreading.
