The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) has apprehended a man in connection with a fire that significantly damaged two downtown businesses.

At approximately 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, Mar. 8, 2026, an officer on patrol noted a heavy smell of smoke and found a fire at the back of the Wooden Shoe European Food Store/Andrew Hilton Wine & Spirits on the 200 block of 3 Ave South.

As a precaution due to the windy conditions, the nearby Wood’s Homes Emergency Youth Shelter was evacuated.

Firefighters with Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services quickly extinguished the flames. Nobody was hurt.

LPS conducted a further investigation, which included interviews with three people found at the scene and an extensive review of security camera footage.

Police determined that the fire started in an encampment near the back of the business.

Initial damages are estimated at $700,000.

Harvey John Sweetgrass, 51, of Lethbridge, is charged with two counts of arson to property. Sweetgrass is currently in custody awaiting a Judicial Interim Release hearing.
