ANNE MARGARET STOAKLEY, 92, of Milk River, Alberta, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. She was born July 6, 1933, in Bellevue, Alberta, to Sophie and Steve Popson.
Anne is survived by her children, Vivienne and Cliff (Chris); son-in-law Vincent; and five grandchildren: Crystal (Josh), Jason, David (Corinna), Jonah, and Cameron. She was predeceased by her husband, James, of 49 years; her daughter, Wendy; and her son-in-law, Doug.
Anne was one of a large and close-knit family. Her siblings included: Mike, Steve, Stan, Kay, Frank, and Helen.
Anne and Jim’s story began in a stubble field at the Popson homestead that had caught fire in 1949. They married three years later, on December 27, 1952. In 1955 they moved to Coutts to farm, and in 1972 Anne joined Jim at H&H Smith Custom Brokers. They both worked there until retirement, with Anne completing 26 years of service. Together they often said it was the best place anyone could spend their career.
Mom had many interests throughout her life. In her earlier years she was a skilled seamstress and baker and was deeply involved in her children’s activities. In later years she devoted more time to gardening, her grandchildren, and her faith. Though she loved being at home most of all, she also traveled with her dear friend Audrey to The Lord’s Ranch in New Mexico to serve those in need. She later joined a group pilgrimage to Medjugorje, a journey she often recalled with gratitude.
Mom loved serving her community which included volunteer work at the Hospital and St. Peter’s Church. She often spoke of the many great people she met over the years while doing this. Having lived in the area for 70 years, Mom often mentioned how blessed she was to have such wonderful friends and deep connections that surrounded her throughout her life. She was especially grateful to spend her final years in Milk River and appreciated the many visits she received. Anne was also thankful for the compassionate care provided by the staff in Long Term Care at the Milk River Hospital.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at ST. PETER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 301 Main Street NW, Milk River, AB, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Dominic Nguyen celebrating. The Memorial Mass will be live-streamed and may be viewed through Anne’s obituary on the Cornerstone website.
