City Council again declares April 7 as Green Shirt Day

Lethbridge city council voted Tuesday to have the Mayor’s Office again declare April 7 as Green Shirt Day.

On April 6, 2018, Canadians were heartbroken to hear the news of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

A day later, on April 7, Lethbridge’s Logan Boulet succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash. After being inspired by his coach and mentor Ric Suggitt to register as an organ donor, Logan Boulet saved six lives. Within weeks, more than 150,000 people registered to become organ donors.

Mayor Blaine Hyggen says he wants to highlight the importance of talking to your family about becoming an organ donor.

“I am pleased that my colleagues on Lethbridge city council have supported my resolutions, first in 2019 to rename Adams Park Ice Centre to Logan Boulet Arena, then each year since 2021 to declare April 7 as Green Shirt Day,” says Mayor Hyggen, in a press release. “I want to keep bringing this item to council annually, rather than as a one-time declaration, to continually highlight Logan’s impact.”

One of the objectives of Green Shirt Day 2026 is “to inspire Canadians not only to register their donation decision but also talk to four more people about it.”

“Green Shirt Day was created to honour, remember and recognize all the victims and families of the fatal crash and to continue Logan’s legacy by inspiring Canadians to talk to their families and register as organ donors,” adds Mayor Hyggen. “Logan Boulet saved lives and his inspiring legacy will continue to save lives. I commend his parents, Toby and Bernie, and sister Mariko, for continuing efforts to promote Green Shirt Day.”

Council again also voted to provide an exception to a decades-old resolution – stating the Mayor’s Office would discontinue the long-standing practice of issuing proclamations to avoid endorsements for a cause or program that would result in controversy in the community – for this extraordinary cause and as an ongoing tribute to Logan Boulet.
