Province invests over $4 million into electronic monitoring program

Apr 1, 2026 | 4:11 PM

The provincial government is set to invest $4.1 million over three years into its electronic monitoring program.

The investment, which comes from the 2026 budget, will expand the program for further supervision of repeat offenders and provide victims with alerts when their safety may be at risk.

How it works: participating victims will receive immediate alerts if an offender breaches a court-ordered boundary, enters a restricted area, or comes near the victim’s location.

“Victims should not have to live in fear or wonder whether the person who hurt them is nearby,” said Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. “With real-time alerts and constant monitoring, victims have the information they need to protect themselves. Offenders will be held to their conditions at all times. Public safety comes first, and we are using every tool available to enforce it.”

The offenders are required to wear a GPS tracking device monitored by Alberta Correctional Services at all hours of the day.

Electronic monitoring is used alongside other supervision tools, including reporting requirements, community supports and coordination with police. It also supports courts when determining bail or sentencing conditions.

“The Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police (AACP) supports the expansion of electronic monitoring as an important step in strengthening supervision of repeat offenders and enhancing public safety,” said Chief Alan Murphy, president of the AACP. “The addition of real-time alerts provides an added layer of safety for victims.”
