Rotary Club of Lethbridge Sunrise facilitating delivery of emergency service vehicles to Mexico

Apr 2, 2026 | 4:45 PM

Members of the Rotary Club of Lethbridge Sunrise will be departing Sunday to deliver emergency and service vehicles to communities in need down in Mexico.

This will be the local Rotary club’s 13th year participating in the Los Amigos campaign, with members from Lethbridge, Grande Prairie, and more transporting 2 fire trucks and 3 handi-buses.

Rotary president Karl Samuels says the vehicles have been donated from organizations and municipalities that no longer need them but want to see them continue to be used by communities in need.

“A lot of these vehicles have been donated to the project by other cities, counties, and towns,” says Samuels. “We, in turn, have a counterpart in Mexico, and here canvases the communities. These communities that need [the vehicles]? Really need them.”

Samules says the trip from Lethbridge to Nogales, Arizona, where the vehicles will be picked up to go the rest of the way, will take about a week.

“The guys that drive are all getting on in their age,” he says. “We don’t like to push it. So, we do the driving anywhere from five to eight hours a day. For instance, the first length would be from Lethbridge to Dillon [Montana], Dillon to Beaver, Utah; Beaver, Utah, to Kingman, Arizona; and Kingman, Arizona, to Nogales, Arizona.”

The vehicles will be taking off from Canadian Tire on Sunday at 7:00 a.m.; members of the public are invited to attend and cheer them on.

“All the Rotaries will come into the Lethbridge area on Saturday,” he says. “We usually have a meeting that evening and a dinner. The next morning, at 6:00 a.m., we’ll assemble in the Canadian Tire parking lot on the southside, and we leave at 7:00 a.m. We head for the border, and then our trip begins.”
