Lethbridge community program offers free grad wear to students in need

Apr 8, 2026 | 4:18 PM

A Lethbridge organization is working to ensure more high school students can cross the graduation stage by removing the cost of formal wear.

MyCityCare has launched its annual Cinderella Project and Tux Shop, offering dresses and suits to students who may face financial barriers.

The program, now in its ninth year, was created after organizers recognized some students were skipping graduation altogether due to the cost.

“There’s students in our city who choose not to attend their grad every year because they’re facing different barriers, usually financial,” said Tanya Lister, Lethbridge director of MyCityCare.

“That was something our team was just really not OK with.”

Through the program, donated dresses and suits are collected and displayed in a boutique-style setting, where students can book private appointments and choose their outfits at no cost.

Lister said about 75 students accessed the program last year, and organizers expect similar numbers in 2026.

Nearly 50 students have already registered.

The program serves Lethbridge and the surrounding area, with similar programs operating in Taber and Okotoks.

Tanya Lister says students can begin by registering online before booking a shopping appointment, where volunteers guide them through the selection process.

Beyond providing clothing, Lister said the program aims to build confidence and create a sense of inclusion.

“By the time they leave, they’re excited and actually anticipating their graduation milestone,” she said.

MyCityCare is currently accepting donations of gently used formal wear, as well as monetary contributions to help cover new items, accessories and alterations.

An open house is scheduled for April 9 at 1401-28 Street North, where community members can tour the boutique and learn more about the program.
