Alberta’s proposed public library restrictions for children, drawing criticism

Apr 10, 2026 | 5:12 PM

Critics of Alberta’s proposed public library restrictions for children are pushing back at the province.

Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams says his bill would protect children 15 and under from stumbling upon graphic visual depictions of sex in public libraries.

Williams says librarians will soon need to keep some materials behind the counter.

But James Turk, with the Centre for Free Expression at Toronto Metropolitan University, says Alberta’s reason is a red herring.

Turk says the province is using a non-existent problem as a ploy to bring radical government overreach into the management of public libraries.

Turk says the bill gives sweeping powers that could see government inspectors access user borrowing history, or pull material they deem distasteful on any subject.

The Coalition of Alberta Public Libraries echoes the concerns, saying the government needs to pause its plan and think about the practical consequences.

The group says the proposed changes are unworkable, could violate patrons’ privacy, and raise questions about how far the minister is willing to control library collections.
