LETHBRIDGE – Residents of Lethbridge are showing their generous side this holiday season.

On Wednesday (Dec. 21) afternoon, Murray Chevrolet Cadillac hit an all-time personal best with their contributions to the United Way Campaign. Chris Murray and staff at Murray Chevrolet Cadillac will present United Way with $74,112. This amount is the largest United Way has seen in its entire partnership with the dealership.

Both the company and the owner Chris Murray himself tripled matched the amounts that employees pledged.

The generous spirit extends through all age groups.

For the 14th year in a row, CUPE Local 290 employees of Lethbridge and area schools organized a Sock it to ‘Em sock-drive for local charities. In the 13 previous years a total of 99,000 pairs of socks have been donated.

“This year we collected 7892 pairs of socks that takes us over 107,000 pairs” says Gail Perie, Sock it to ‘Em organized, a retired School District 51 caretaker and passionate volunteer for the cause. “It doesn’t matter if you have toques and a warm coat if you have wet feet you’re still cold all over. These people who need these socks, their whole mode of transportation is their feet, so it’s important,” she says.

The socks will be donated to the Salvation Army, Harbour House, Woods Homes and a local homeless shelter.

This week, Streets Alive Mission has been passing out 400 “Goodie Bags of Love” filled with food, winter wear, and personal hygiene products to those less fortunate living in single-room accommodations downtown, shelters and treatment centres.

On December 14th, volunteers from various businesses donated items and their time to assemble the bags for Streets Alive clients.
