Lethbridge firefighters’ union hosts CPR training amid EMS system debate

More than 200 people gathered on Sunday (Apr. 12) for a free CPR training session and community barbecue hosted by Lethbridge firefighters, as union members called on the province of Alberta to maintain the city’s integrated emergency response system.

The event, organized by Lethbridge Firefighters IAFF Local 237, took place outside the constituency office of Lethbridge-East MLA and Minister Nathan Neudorf.

Organizers say participants learned hands-only CPR and heard from firefighters and paramedics about the importance of rapid emergency response.

“This is life and death,” said Brent Nunweiler, President of IAFF Local 237.

“Today’s turnout shows how much this community values fast, reliable emergency response.”

Nunweiler warned that proposed changes to Alberta’s EMS system could impact response times and care delivery in Lethbridge.

Lethbridge’s integrated Fire & EMS model combines firefighting and paramedic services and has operated in the city for more than a century, the union says.

Nunweiler said firefighters have seen firsthand how the current system saves lives and provides timely care.

The province has extended a deadline for the city to respond to proposed changes to ambulance services to May 31, following pressure from city council.

The union says it will continue pushing for the existing model in the coming weeks.
