Picture Butte is turning 100 years old.

Wednesday, April 15, marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Picture Butte Post Office and the founding of the community.

To celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime milestone, the Town of Picture Butte is holding a commemorative plaque unveiling the same day in front of the post office, south of the town office.

Picture Butte was founded thanks in part to the establishment of the Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District System in 1923 and the construction of the railroad in 1925.

Officials say a sugar factory started around 1935 and was a major source of income for the town, up until its closure in 1978 when they transitioned towards livestock feeding, warehousing, and small industrial services.

The commemorative plaque unveiling is happening at 11:00 a.m. on April 15, followed by a lunch event at the Picture Butte Community Centre.

To also celebrate the historic occasion, the Town of Picture Butte will be holding an enhanced Jamboree Days celebration Aug. 14-16, with the full schedule currently being finalized.
